This Fateful Place was recorded on a Teac 144 Series 4Track,
which was kindly loaned to Neil by his close friend, Sham Iqbal.
Some of the ideas were left over from The Inquisition which
meant that they were already well-rehearsed and could be
recorded quickly. Other songs like 'Paperchase' and 'Twelve
Years On' were written with the theme in mind.

Although the flavour of the album is decidedly dark and bleak,
this is not an excuse for the budget recording equipment and
harsh brittle sound. As Neil put it ''This was a hard time for me,
I was living alone in the shell of a house which I couldn't afford
to furnish, the mood of the album accurately reflects those
feelings of isolation and despair''. It's important to mention
that 'This Fateful Place' was Neil's first solo project and that
there were many lessons to be learnt. Frustrations with the
limited sound quality meant that material written after the
album would be arranged with a commercial studio in mind.
It was at this time that Guy and Neil recorded 'Hunger and the
hurting' which was to became a long-standing favourite for Neil.
