For his second solo album, Neil chose to record and mix
exclusively at In A City. Most of the new material was
already sketched out' on fourtrack and the drum program-
ming was transferred to the studios cubase set up. There
were still songs left over from other bands which needed
recording for posterity sake if nothing else. One such song
'Flowers in Vain' was left over from The Inquisition.
Although it exists as a fourtrack song written and recorded
with Dave Turner, Neil felt that the song had evolved
through its live presentation with The Inquisition and
wanted to try and capture that spirit.
'Hunger and the
Hurting', a long time favourite was re-recorded and Neil
felt that he had finally proved its worth. New songs like
'Choked' allowed Neil the dynamic framework within which
he could express a moving lament for a passing friend.
This is all desperate stuff - moving away from the
blackened angst of Fateful Place, there is tension here.
Amongst the driving rock songs Neil pauses for thought
and reflective sentiment on songs like 'Hard Against the
Parapet'
Even though the album opens with stark warnings
about the darker side of spirituality the songs progress
through cycles of emotion whilst maintaining the central
theme of mankinds insurmountable challenges. In the end,
we are brought to realise that when we feel completely
invincible, we can be brought down and crushed by what
we least expect.
