It was Graham Lumley and Steve Middleditch who founded The Cotton Pickers
in 1991 and later invited Neil to sing the songs that they had penned together.
Impressed by the 'honesty' of the songs, Neil joined the group. The first eleven
tracks were recorded at In A City Studios between 1991 and 1992 before Steve
     left to travel abroad.
As far as Neil is concerned, The Cotton Pickers were playing live in and around
Bradford/Leeds at the same time as Heaven Scent. In fact working with two bands

would have been a nightmare scenario if it weren't for the relaxed attitude of Cotton

Pickers rehearsals. During 1992, when the band were performing regularly

and constantly gaining repeat bookings, this relaxed atmosphere came across

well to their audiences. Grahams song 'Ain't Nobody's Dreamboat' was so well

received that Neil hit upon the idea of using giant cue boards with the chorus lyrics

printed, so that the audience could sing-along. This proved enormously popular at

most venues and helped to earn themselves a reputation on the local circuit for

providing a lighthearted and fun musical evening.

Following Steve's departure Graham and Neil completed the songs which had not

been recorded and enlisted Sam Cheal to sing backing vocals. Carl Stipetic (The

Studio Engineer) also added a touch of piano, to make the sound complete.
Graham left Yorkshire in 1995 to pursue his career in electrical engineering.
